The Process and Resources

The Process

To accomplish this task, you must go through the following steps.

  1. Using the video, The Crusades: The Crescent & The Cross, and the following questionnaire, Questions over The Crusades: The Crescent and the Cross, view the video in its entirety as you answer the questions listed in the handout. Please note that the questions are in sequential order. If your teacher does not own a copy of this video, you can view it online at either YouTube, The Daily Motion, Google videos depending on your filters at school. You may use the following link: The Crusades: The Crescent & The Crossnbsp; If the link is broken, please do a Bing, Yahoo, or Google Search for the film.
  2. In groups of three students or as a class with a moderator, discuss your responses to the questionnaire in step 1. Please make sure your group clears up any misunderstandings in the questionnaire that may arise from viewing the video.
  3. Using the Web resources listed in the RESOURCE section, please gather responses to the following list of questions.
    • Overview of all the Crusades
      • How many were there?
      • What is the significance of the first three?
      • What was a timeline of all of them?
      • What was their overall purpose (if there were one common theme among them?
    • The First Crusade, The Second Crusade, The Third Crusade
      • What was its beginning date and its ending date?
      • Who was responsible?
      • Did it have financial backing? if so, who funded it?
      • Was it approved/sanctioned by the Church? King? Country?
      • Why did it start?
      • Who led?
      • What countries/peoples participated?
      • What were some major battles? cities involved?
      • What were the outcomes?
      • Did this Crusade follow the overall purpose or was there a different agenda?
    • What are some historical views on the Crusades?
      • Give at least two historical perspectives on the Crusades by professors or historians (try to refrain from using biased sources-which may be difficult to do)
